Q. How do I make arrangements for special needs and/or assistance?

Q. Can my child travel alone on a South African Express flight?

A. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 may travel unaccompanied. For young passengers travelling alone, we have separate check-in facilities and dedicated ground staff to help on departure and arrival. For further details please contact your local South African Express office.

 

Q. Can my pet travel in the cabin with me?

A. Live animals and all pets are not permitted in the cabin of South African Express aircraft. They can be accepted as checked baggage (and carried in the aircraft hold) for which normal excess baggage rates will apply or, as cargo at applicable cargo rates. Live animals and all pets can only be accepted provided that the IATA Live Animals Regulations are met in there entirety, as well as any additional government regulations which apply in the state of origin, transit and destination. Q. Is it possible to use my CD player and laptop on the plane?

A. Electronic devices such as CD players, radios, televisions can interfere with the aircraft navigation system. We ask customers to refrain from using these devices during the flight. Laptop computers, computer games, cassette recorders and electric razors may be used during the flight, however, must not be used during take-off and landing. If in doubt, contact your local South African Express office.

 

Q. Can my firearm travel with me

A. Yes, however all firearms must be declared at time of check in and may not be checked in as checked baggage.
The firearm must be handled via the designated firearm handling process.

Hand Held Firearms:
A R100 handling fee is raised for the carriage of hand held firearms. Payment will only be accepted in the form of credit cards or cash at the firearm desk or allocated firearms acceptance area. These firearms will be processed at the firearm desk for safe carriage in the hold of the aircraft.

 

Q. What are Dangerous Goods

A. Dangerous Goods are items that may endanger the safety of an aircraft or persons on board the aircraft.

Dangerous Goods are also known as restricted articles, hazardous materials and dangerous cargo. Their carriage on South African Express aircraft is primarily governed by the Civil Aviation Authority Regulations.

Dangerous Goods must not be carried in (or as) passenger or crew-checked baggage or carry-on baggage, except as indicated in the table below. Security type attaché cases incorporating Dangerous Goods, such as lithium batteries or pyrotechnic devices, are totally forbidden.

Disabling devices such as mace, pepper spray, etc. containing an irritant or incapacitating substance is prohibited on the person, in checked and carry-on baggage.

Q. What do I do when my baggage has been delayed, missing or damaged?

A. When baggage has been lost, passengers should follow this claims procedure:

  • Passengers who have lost baggage/contents or find on arrival that their bags have been damaged or mishandled must report the loss or damage immediately to South African Express’ Lost Property Office or within seven days of the incident, either in person at the airport, or in writing.
  • After acquiring a reporting number from the South African Express’ Lost Property office in the baggage claims area at the airport, complete a claim form, and take it or send it to the Passenger Claims office with the documentation (this is specified on the claim form). It will take up to 21 working days to finalise all claims.
  • South African Express does not take responsibility for the loss of items in checked luggage such as money, passports or visas, PC equipment, electronic devices, Cellphones, fragile items, business documents, valuable items and jewellery.
  • South African Express' liability for lost baggage is $20 (US) per kg.
